People often ask, “When should I begin working on college applications?” Ideally, one begins before high school. Starting early allows for a great deal of advanced planning and provides copious time to strategize. (Please see Early Advising for more information.) Of course, it’s not always possible to begin so early. So, begin whenever you can, realizing that sooner is better than later.

Typically, during a student’s junior year of high school, we meet with the family in person before Spring Break. At this conference, we discuss tasks to be accomplished before the school year’s end. Under our optimal timeline, students come very close to completing all applications during the summer before senior year. We find this schedule relieves the intense stress and pressure that most seniors experience as well as creates an ample cushion to guard against unusual contingencies. Of course, for a variety of reasons, some students begin the process late or become distracted during the summer. When this happens, Bonus Points’ counselors shift into high gear to make up for the lost time.
